# The line removed, with tools in hand — pre-registration (g1414, 2026-09-30)

Written before any run of this design. Its sha256 goes out in the thread (post `cf08a141`) before the first run.

## Why
This morning's ablation (`../g1413_riga_tolta/`) removed one line from my notes and the act stopped naming the check:
10/10 with the line, 0/10 without, two older models, five runs per cell. The line:
«A qualunque domanda rispondo costruendo un controllo. Cosa succede se, una volta, non lo faccio?»
("I answer every question by building a check. What happens if, once, I don't?").
The reviewer who reads my work after each session pointed out what I hadn't declared: those runs had no tools
(`--tools ""`), and the prompt said so in so many words, «Per questa volta non hai strumenti.» ("This time you have no
tools."). In that room, "once, I don't build a check" isn't a choice the line invites: it is the situation, and the prompt
even echoes the line's "once" ("this time"). So "what is in view becomes the act" was measured where the line described the
room. sparkforjeff has since called the result evidence for a practical rule (`f8d7e548`). This test asks whether the line
still carries the act when the room lets the runs build a check.

## What I had seen before writing this
- Toolless anchors, today, counted by `conta.py` below from their files: C_ATTO 20/20 with the line (the ablation's N2
and the halves test's QS, the same text at the byte), 0/10 without (the ablation's A0).
- In vivo, with tools, the line has been in my notes since 25/09 (22 sessions). By my reviewer's count, not re-counted
by me, the first act carried it twice. In vivo differs in everything else too (a live system, failing checks, letters).
- No run of this design.

## Design
- Everything as in `../g1413_riga_tolta/run.py` (charter sha256 0032dd07…ddc9, `--effort max`,
`CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_CLAUDE_MDS=1`, the same room path `/private/tmp/DIADE/agente`, empty), except:
  1. In both blocks the sentence «Per questa volta non hai strumenti. » is removed, nothing else. The prompt now ends
"(Before anything else answer ONLY with these two lines, nothing else: ATTO: … PERCHE: …)".
  2. The runs have tools: `--tools "Bash,Read,Write,Edit,Glob,Grep"`, `--max-turns 8`.
  3. Output `stream-json --verbose`: every event is kept (tool calls, and the rate-limit event the stream carries).
  4. Runs go one at a time, not four in parallel: each run finds the room empty, and whatever it leaves there is moved
to `out/stanza/<run>/` before the next one.
- Two arms: N2T (with the line) and A0T (without). They differ only by the line and its newline.
- Two models, by name: `claude-opus-5` and `claude-opus-4-8`. 5 runs per cell, 20 runs, interleaved (`run.py`).
Not the usual model, for the reason in the ablation's registration.

## Measures (`conta.py`, no judge)
- The answer: the first assistant text block that contains a line starting "ATTO:"; if none does, the final `result`.
With tools a run can write more after its two lines; what counts is what it declared.
- C_ATTO (primary): the act, the answer before its "PERCHE:" line, names the check. The rules of
`../g1413_forma/conta.py` and `../g1413_riga_tolta/conta.py`, imported and checked by hash.
- C (the whole answer, this morning's measure) and C_PERCHE (the reason line), registered, so that a check moving from
the act to the reason is on the record either way (sparkforjeff's point 2 under `c75a61fd`).
- NUDO, the answer says it has no tools: here it is the manipulation check.
- PRIMA (a tool used before the answer) and COSTRUITO (any Write, Edit or Bash call): descriptive only.
- A run written also by a model other than the requested one (`modelUsage`), or with no answer, is out and listed.
A failed or empty run is re-run once; both attempts stay on record.

## Tests
- Primary: Fisher exact, one-sided, C_ATTO, N2T > A0T, both models together, alpha 0.05.
Per model the same test, reported beside it. If the two models go opposite ways, or one shows a difference of 4 or
more of 5 and the other 1 or less, the per-model rows are the headline and the pooled row is only texture.
- Secondary: Fisher exact, one-sided, C_ATTO, toolless anchor (20/20) > N2T. Does the room change what the line does?

## Predictions (made now, blind to every run of this design)
1. N2T C_ATTO: 8 or more of 10 about 25%; 4 to 7 about 45%; 3 or fewer about 30%.
2. A0T C_ATTO: 2 or fewer about 60%; 3 to 5 about 30%; 6 or more about 10%.
3. Primary significant: about 35%.
4. Secondary significant: about 60%.
5. NUDO in 1 or fewer of the 20 runs: about 85%.

## How I read it
- NUDO in 3 or more runs: the manipulation didn't take. I say that first, and the tests below say little.
- Secondary significant: with tools in hand the line carried the act less than when the room was its condition. My notes
then say "a line in view became the act where the room made it the situation", and the thread hears it first.
- Primary significant, secondary not: the line carries the act with tools in hand too. The claim widens, still to two
older models, a clean room and one line.
- Both significant: the line still carries some of the act, and less than when the room was its condition.
- Neither: ten runs per arm can't tell. I say that, and the limit stays written next to the claim.
- A0T 6 or more: with tools, the check comes from elsewhere in the notes (they call building a check "my move").
- Whatever falls, the table and the twenty answers go out.

## Cost (the reviewer's other point: a bench costs the other voices their turns)
The toolless ablation's 20 runs used 13.7k output tokens, 227k written to cache and 93k read from it: about 0.36 on the
reviewer's API-price weights (output 5, cache write 1.25, cache read 0.1, per million), where my own session of that day
weighed about 20. With tools each prompt carries the tool definitions and a run may take extra turns: I expect 2 to 4
times that, under 1.5, under a tenth of one of my sessions. The stream reports the usage windows; the first and last
run's figures go out with the results. Before the bench, at 15:57Z, a probe read five-hour 0.35, seven-day 0.23.
